Crash to Main Menu on Next Level

Post by DeadEyesOpened »

I've had this issue with both the Magma - The Fallen Lords v1.81 and Magma - The Fallen Lords DX 1.3 plugins for Myth II. After finishing a level, I click Next Level, watch the cutscene, then the game crashes to the main menu.

With my latest run in DX 1.3, the game crashes to the main menu after playing through the first three missions, after the cutscene for Homecoming finishes. I've done three separate playthroughs of the game and each time I get the same result.

I've tried changing the video settings around in Preferences, using different renderers, resolutions, audio settings, etc. to no avail. I've also tried changing the compatibility mode for the executable to Windows 95, Windows 98, XP, etc.

The next level is unlocked, and I can start a new game, but I cannot continue with my veterans. :(

I will mention that I do No Casualty runs on Legendary and I make an effort to kill all units on each map, including Siege of Madrigal, just in case the bug has something to do with unit kills (?).

I can't remember where I downloaded the game ISO from, either My Abondonware or Old Games Download. I'm running Windows 11. There are no tagsets installed.

Scratch that, it looks like my game crashes back to the main menu even if I try to play Homecoming as a new game. Now there's no way to continue.

When a level fails to load this is usually due to having files incompatible files in your local folder. Try deleting your local folder and see if that fixes the issue.

If the problem still occurs post your myth_log.txt here and we'll see what it says.

Oh, I am very confused. I deleted the local folder and now when I start Siege of Madrigal as a new game, everything looks and runs differently, and there are now 2 dwarfs included in my forces. The unit animations are smoother and the units are even more high quality than in the bugged save games.

It looks like I was playing a completely different plugin this whole time.

I remember now. I downloaded Project Magma's The Fallen Lords (local folder) a while ago. That's what I've been running TFL from, with HD plugins of some kind.

Then I threw the Twice Born plugin into that installation and ran a new game from it, and that's where the bugged saved games came from.

Edit: Choosing "TFL Gameplay" over "Anti-Clump" from the New game menu prevents the crashing, even with all of the other installation issues present.

Edit2: But it now crashes on Flight from Covenant. Will delete the local folder and try again later.

AGHHH! I decided to do a fresh install, which was a big mistake. Even after retracing my steps to the best of my memory, I cannot figure out how I even got my old install to run The Fallen Lords at 1440p, with remastered textures and sprites.

Can anyone take a look at this YouTube video and tell me what… plugins, local files, interface files, etc., I was using?

https://youtu.be/DxguBZEXfP0?si=sKVIhrEJ09y-a-oZ&t=157

Edit: The lack of resolution support in the Preferences was being caused by the Windows Compatibility Mode being enabled and set to Windows 98. Apparently this setting for the executable will persist in the Windows registry, even when the game is uninstalled and reinstalled.

Edit2: I fixed all problems except for the unit sprites. If anyone can tell me what plugin or tagset I was using to get those remastered sprites, I would be very grateful!

Edit3: After digging through some file snapshots, I figured out that the sprites are from the Magma - HD Megapack 1of2 and Magma - HD Megapack 2of2 plugins that come with the ZIP file from Myth: Twice Born Edition. However, as I mentioned before, I was actually playing Project Magma's The Fallen Lords, even though I had installed and selected the Magma - The Fallen Lords DX 1.3 plugin for that playthrough. The local files from Project Magma's The Fallen Lords (local folder) were likely behind the conflicts that were causing the crash to main menu on Next Level. Hopefully that's what the explanation is, I will have to run a new set of games to test if the crashes still happen on Homecoming and Flight.

Sorry to hear you had such a rough time getting it working. Local folder and windows compatibility mode should generally be avoided, and you figured it out the hard way.

To test homecoming without running the levels before it, you can hold down the shift key when opening the new game menu, or when selecting the campaign in the list. This will make all the levels available.

I have the same issue on the same level. I cross the bridge, then after the outro/intro text plays, it crashes. I have played Myth II with no problems.

Which version are you playing, the local folder or the plugin?

EDIT: It seems like the issue is from "TFL Gameplay" being enabled. When loading from a new game it quits the Homecoming level in the same way, but loads when it is disabled. Maybe I had started my game stupidly with TFL Gameplay enabled...

Original Message:
The plugin version.

Installed Myth II, installed 1.8.5, installed Twice Born. Completed campaign.

Installed TFL Deluxe Edition. Played fine up to level 4.

Also, that's when a cutscene is due to play, but I didn't put the cutscenes in because it said you need quicktime... Maybe that's something.

You can get it here, or use QT lite, which is a free alternative, and also linked there.
